Each year it happens, like some yuletide of high notes: The world's most expensive karaoke show, otherwise known as the American Idol Live! tour. No matter what kind of indignities they've had to endure, the top 10 finalists have earned this one moment in the spotlight without Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and J.Lo kibitzing every lyric.
And they'll soak up every minute of it. After the tour, most of them will head into that phantom zone of the entertainment industry, competing with Constantine Maroulis for headlining spots at the state fair. Cruel? Hey, that's why the fans pay top dollar. Like any fine cheese, Idol status comes with an expiration date.
