Coachella music festival heads to sea on Celebrity ship - USA TODAY

The famed Coachella musical festival soon will have a new venue: A cruise ship.

Celebrity Cruises says it has teamed up with Coachella organizer Goldenvoice to take the 13-year-old Southern California extravaganza to the high seas for the first time on the 2,886-passenger Celebrity Silhouette.

The line will offer two back-to-back "S.S. Coachella" cruises on the ship in December featuring headline performances by Pulp as well as performances by Hot Chip, Yeasayer, Girl Talk, James Murphy (DJ Set), Sleigh Bells, Simian Mobile Disco, Z-Trip, !!!, Warpaint, DJ Harvey, El-P, Killer Mike and other artists.

Music festivals at sea have become a booming business in recent years, with music cruise organizers such as Sixthman chartering some of the world's largest ships for music-focused sailings such as The Rock Boat, now in its 13th year. Read more about The Rock Boat.

The first of the two Coachella sailings, a three-night trip to the Bahamas, kicks off Dec. 16 in Fort Lauderdale. The second sailing, a four-night trip to Jamaica, begins Dec. 19 in Fort Lauderdale.

Fares for the Coachella cruises start at $500 per person. Cabins can be booked starting on Saturday. More information is available online at the Coachella website.
