Kristen Stewart shocked her longtime boyfriend and fans alike when she issued a public apology to Robert Pattinson for cheating on him with director Rupert Sanders. Despite her earnest sentiments, some Hollywood insiders think Stewart's airing of such a personal matter was a seriously misguided move.

"The only thing more stupid than being famous and cheating in public is admitting it and issuing a public apology," the publicist for many A-list clients tells the Huffington Post. "Most celebrities are advised to ignore it or issue statements saying the pictures were taken out of context. Everyone in Hollywood is asking why she confessed to this so fast."

The Twilight star, 22, could have remained silent on the Us Weekly cover expose, especially considering many fans refused to believe the photos of her with her Snow White and the Huntsman director, 41, were even real. But Stewart ended all speculation about the subject by releasing her apology.

"This was career suicide," one weekly magazine editor said of Stewart's confession. "Because of her statement, Us Weekly [which had the exclusive images] was up 25 percent in newsstand sales. The number guarantees the story will be on the weekly covers again this week."

In the end, Stewart's apology did nothing to shut down coverge of the story. "If Kristen thought the statement would get ahead of the story and suck the oxygen out of the fire, she is wrong. She just poured gas on the fire."
