'Boardwalk Empire': What You Need To Know For Season Three! - MTV.com

Nucky Thompson's bootleggin', Tommy gunnin' hijinks are returning this Sunday, when the third season of "Boardwalk Empire" premieres on HBO. The second season finale left a main character dead, another on the lam and a new marriage on the verge of collapse.

We were able to check out the first episode of "Boardwalk Empire" season three, so here's a sneak preview of what you can expect on your return trip to Atlantic City and 1923.

The Jimmy Factor
The first episode of season three enters unfamiliar territory for the series from the word "go," since there has never been an episode of "Boardwalk Empire" without Michael Pitt as Jimmy Darmody. The loss of the second lead during last year's season finale leaves a major question of how things will settle when the story picks up about a year and a half later. With Jimmy having such strong ties to so many characters, his absence is sure to affect them all in at least a minor way.

Who is Gyp Rosetti?
One of the new additions to this year's cast is a violent New York gangster by the name of Gyp Rosetti. Played by Bobby Cannavale, Gyp makes a quick impression in the season premiere and poses a threat to Nucky's grasp on Atlantic City. "Gyp Rosetti is trouble for everyone," Nucky says in the trailer, and after the season premiere, you'll have a good idea why.

The Good Brother
The relationship between Nucky and his brother and perpetual second fiddle, Eli, has always been shaky at its strongest. But after a season largely spent attempting to take his brother down, Eli took a pretty hard fall for Nucky and landed in prison for it. Not far into the season, we'll find out what that's done to Eli and how the former sheriff of Atlantic City will have some ground to make up.

Richard Harrow
With Jimmy Darmody permanently out of the picture, the character with the biggest adjustment to make is Jack Huston's Richard Harrow. The masked fan favorite only had Jimmy and his wife Angela as his connection to the rest of society, but with both gone, he will have to find someone else to reach out to. We know that Jimmy and Angela left behind their son, but Huston has hinted at another character that will come into Richard's life during season three.

Mr. and Mrs. Thompson
The very end of season two left the newly married couple on a collision course, after Margaret signed away an important tract of land to the church. Nucky and Margaret have had disagreements in the past, but she has never affected his business as directly as she did with the generous donation. The season-three premiere should leave little doubt about the state of this union.
