It's a new season, and that means that the cast of "Glee" will be going in lots of new directions, quite literally.
Tonight's season four premiere, billed "The New Rachel," will follow the veteran Gleeks as they embark on lives outside of McKinley High. As the rookies who will not only be shaking up life in Lima, established characters will leave small-town Ohio to head off to other locales post-graduation, including New York City (Chris Colfer's Kurt and Lea Michele's Rachel), Los Angeles (Amber Riley's Mercedes), St. Louis (Naya Rivera's Santana) and New Haven, Connecticut (Dianna Agron's Quinn).
"You basically have the kids who have graduated and their story lines, as well as the kids back in high school," Michele explained to MTV News of the multi-location format kicking off this season. "I think it'll be really great because it gives us the opportunity for the characters who have been on the show for a while to move on and to start new story lines, but then the kids who are newer on the show will get to continue on."
In the sea of newbies joining the show this season, two A-listers stand out. Kate Hudson will play Rachel's feisty dance teacher in the Big Apple at NYADA. And, if a recent tease of Hudson's fiery season premiere dance number (where she belts out a medley of Lady Gaga's "Americano" and Jennifer Lopez's "Dance Again") teaches us anything, it's that Hudson can dance, sing and scare the bejesus out of Rachel in one fell swoop.
She's not the only big screen star hitting the show this season. Sarah Jessica Parker also has a recurring role. She'll play Kurt's eccentric mentor at Vogue.com, Isabelle Klempt, during his internship there. In a way, it's a nod to Carrie Bradshaw's (Parker) writing gig at Vogue on "Sex and the City."
Colfer teased earlier this year that fans should expect some "awesomeness" from those Hudson and Parker cameos, with Michele adding, "They're the best. It's really cool."
Back in Lima, Jacob Artist, Melissa Benoist, Becca Tobin and Dean Geyer all join the cast as some of McKinley's newest faces. And, Colfer offered up some advice for the new class.
"Oh gosh! I don't know! Bring a book to set cause there's lots of down time," he said. "No, there was [sing alongs]. For like the first day [there was], but that got old after the first day," he joked. "But, no, it's not quite the Julliard utopia that people think it is on set. No, once we're done singing in front of camera, we're like 'Oh lord! I need a nap.' We're not like 'Oh, where can I sing some more?'"
Britney Spears will once again get "Glee"-d out on the show's second episode of the season. The episode billed as "Britney 2.0" is the follow-up to the 2010 episode, which even included a cameo from Spears herself.
This one is Britney-free, but the set list includes "Oops!... I Did It Again," "Hold It Against Me," "Gimme More," "3" and medley sure to get not only Britney fans excited but also Beliebers amped, a mash-up of her "Boys" and Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend." (The show airs the same night as the Spears-starring "X Factor.")
Riley gushed about the "Britney 2.0" episode, sharing, "There's so much Britney music. I grew up listening to Britney Spears. She definitely has been a part of my high school years coming up."
But Spears isn't the only one getting covered, it seems that Ryan Murphy and his crew has once again plucked some of the biggest songs on the Top 40 to throw into storylines this season. The premiere alone will include tunes by Carly Rae Jepsen (Call Me Maybe"), Billy Joel ("New York State of Mind"), Adele ("Chasing Pavements"), Imagine Dragons ("It's Time") and The Fray ("Never Say Never").
Other tracks expected to appear on the show this season include tunes by Demi Lovato ("Give Your Heart A Break"), Taylor Swift ("Mine"), No Doubt ("Don't Speak") and the Tears for Fears ("Everybody Wants to Rule the World").
