Britney Spears at the âX Factorâ auditions in Providence, R.I., this summer.
The claws are out and the mouse ears are long gone.
When Fox launches the new season of âX Factorâ tonight, it wonât be the first time Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera have gone toe-to-toe â" but it will be the former Mouseketeers turned pop tartsâ first prime-time TV duel.
Spears joins Simon Cowellâs variety show as a judge this year on Fox while Aguilera returns as a judge on NBCâs âThe Voice.â
The popular talent shows will butt heads at 8 p.m.
But snarky Cowell, never one to mince words, already has expressed his frustration with NBC scheduling tonightâs extra episode of âThe Voiceâ as a blatant bid to spoil Britneyâs debut. He claimed to be angry, âbecause I think thereâs a kind of gentleman's agreement,â Cowell said last week.
âBritneyâs not going to appreciate the fact that Christina â" who has been a bit of a rival â" isnât allowing Britney to have a night of her own,â Cowell whined.
âI think itâs mean-spirited and I hope and I pray that it backfires on them, because itâs one of the best shows weâve ever made,â Cowell said. This weekâs three consecutive nights of âVoiceâ are âtoo much,â he continued, predicting that viewers will choose âX Factor.â
Both Spears and Aguilera have declined to comment about the rivalry.
Last year âThe Voiceâ was the clear ratings winner, snagging an average of 15.9 million viewers for its performance shows and 11.3 million for its results episodes. âX Factorâ averaged 12.6 million viewers overall.
